Preparing for the May workshops in Alice Springs!

 
The countdown is now on with less than a month until Dr Haley Tancredi and Professor Linda Graham return to Central Region to visit schools and facilitate the Part 2 Workshops in Alice Springs!

Remember: If you attended the Friday Part 1 Workshop, you are invited to join us again on Friday 23 May for Part 2 (access the
Friday Part 2 Workshop flyer).

At the workshop, participants will be guided through a process of educational resource redesign for accessibility. 


Important! On Friday 23 May please bring with you a printed or electronic version of an educational resource that you use in your teaching practice (e.g., a worksheet, booklet, or online resource that you have developed). We will use your resource in an interactive task.

The Part 2 Workshop also includes a session on student consultation. We will unpack resources designed to support teachers and allied health professionals to engage students with disability in accessible consultation and discuss how the tools can be used in your contexts.

For the Inclusive Practice Collective (participants who attended the Saturday Part 1 Workshop), we will see you again both on Friday 23 May and Saturday 24 May (access the
Saturday Part 2 Workshop flyer).

Website resource spotlight: Additional Resources

 
 
Are you seeking resources to help spread your knowledge of inclusive education with your colleagues? The Inclusive Education and Allied Health Project website houses a series of Additional Resources that are available for you to use and share. You can access:
  • Not all models of education are inclusive (video)
  • Inclusive education – key dates in history (video)
  • Language and attentional difficulties explainer (one-page handout)
  • Learning and memory (one-page handout).
Below are some suggestions for how you might use these resources in your school community:
  • Share the electronic files with your school team, faculty, and/or school leadership team and use the resources to generate discussion about how inclusive education is being actioned in your school,
  • Print the Explainers and display them in your staffroom or school office,
  • Share a link to the Additional Resources in your school newsletter.

All participating schools now have a copy of Inclusive Education for the 21st Century: Theory, Policy, and Practice (Graham, 2024).

An important chapter to read is Chapter 5: The legal foundations of inclusion by Dr Elizabeth Dickson. Dr Dickson is a legal scholar who commenced her career as a classroom teacher, working in both government and non-government schools.

In this chapter, Dr Dickson first discusses the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability and covers physical, intellectual, sensory, mental health, behavioural, and learning impairments. She then discusses the Disability Standards for Education 2005, which were developed to clarify the obligations of educators, school leaders, and school systems, particularly the provision of adjustments. The chapter also outlines relevant examples from Australian case law. This is an accessible (and important) read for all school staff.

Why not keep the conversation going with your school team by reading Chapter 5 ahead of a staff meeting, where you can have a 15-minute focused discussion on what you have read and reflected on.
